HENDERSON-BERTOLON SIMULATION CENTER

Nursing students gather around a simulation mannequin in a "clinical" setting.

Practical Nursing Simulation

In 2019, North Shore Community College established a simulation center program within the Health Profession division. Within the program’s first three years, simulation lab usage increased by 35% as the number of academic programs utilizing simulations increased. This growth coupled with a philanthropic gift allowed for North Shore Community College to establish a dedicated Simulation Center.

The additional simulation labs would increase the program’s SIM capabilities with a variety of scenarios and provide more interdisciplinary simulation education.

MDS was engaged to develop a program and test-fit options to establish the new Simulation Center on the first floor of the school’s Health Professions and Student Services Building. The existing space consisted of a mix of an open and enclosed office suite that would serve the program’s expansion.

The new Simulation Center required modifications to the enclosed offices to create right-sized SIM Labs and Control Rooms, as well as some adjustments to the HVAC system, electrical and Tel/Data to accommodate the simulations. Interior finishes were replaced to reflect a “clinical” setting.

The establishment of the new Henderson-Bertolon Simulation Center provides the school with five additional simulation labs, allowing for a wider variety of simulation scenarios that can be used by more teaching programs. In addition to the Simulation Labs and Control Rooms, the 5,100 sf space includes a mock Physician’s exam room, equipment alcove, medication room, storage room, debrief rooms, nurse’s station, waiting lobby, and computer workstations.
