Berklee College of Music
Cafe 939

BOSTON, MA

Berklee College of Music's Cafe 939 is a state-of-the-art, all-ages, student-run music venue and coffee house. It was envisioned as a new kind of learning, performance, and social center where students can showcase talent and engage in authentic learning experiences, while also enjoying Boston's rich musical community.

Cafe 939 Performance

Cafe 939 showcases Berklee's emerging student talent, local artists, as well as national acts seeking a more intimate, personal space in which to perform and connect with their fans.

Cafe 939 is located in the historic, architecturally significant Tennis and Racquet Club Building in Boston's Back Bay. The 200-person capacity concert venue is an intimate performance space that enables performers to connect with their audience. Our renovation converted the former work space into the performance venue with enhanced acoustic treatment, performance stage, state-of-the-art lighting and audio controls, and a backstage/green room area. Movable furniture supports a variety of performances.

Our renovation required accessibility improvements with a new accessible ramp at the building's main entrance. The scope also included improvements to the second floor Student Services Center. It created an expanded counseling center, student activities center and organization work rooms, and a multipurpose lounge. The facility connects directly to the adjacent Uchida Academic Complex through a second-level connection, where MDS reconfigured, expanded and updated the Admissions Department suite. An expanded reception area and meeting rooms equipped with state-of-the-art technologies support the Admissions Department operations.
