Drone Testing Area and workstation

The Lowell Advanced Robotics Initiative Laboratory supports University of Massachusetts Lowell’s (UML) growing interdisciplinary robotics program that combines computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and many other STEM-related disciplines to engage students in the dynamic field of robotics research and development.

Located in the historic 1903 Southwick Building, a former education center for the textile industry, the project converts a suite of classrooms on the fourth floor to a 3,700 sf lab. The flexible space is organized in separate testing and work zones, complimented by construction/tinkering/maintenance and storage areas. Testing area—equipped with motion capture technologies—support both drone and ambulatory robot research and testing. An open floor plan with ceiling-mounted power and movable furniture support future adaptability. The renovation requires infrastructure upgrades in both the Southwick and adjacent Dandeneau Buildings and will be constructed in 2022.
